ABOUT - THE LOVELY BUNS STORY

Lovely buns was established in February 2019 by Alice, the lady behind the buns. She started selling cupcakes from a market stall on Brick Lane and now creates vegan cakes, cookies, buns and block cakes from her kitchen in Dalston, using quality sustainably sourced ingredients.

Before it began...

I started Lovely Buns after having spent a lot of time talking about "having my own business". I've always been the 'creative type' and would normally be found cooking, baking, painting, drawing, making clothes and even singing and dancing on a stage (those days are long gone), essentiality I was the child that did every extra curricular activity that didn't include academia. I went on to study fashion design at London College of Fashion, but after 3 years of hard graft and many tears on the phone to my parents, realised that fashion was not my calling.

Having worked a few odd jobs after university, I went to cater in a chalet in France, baking and cooking everyday. I then spent a few years catering on music tours around the UK and Europe, learning on the job and working alongside some great crew. I was lucky enough to bake cakes for musicians including the Arctic Monkeys, Take That, Robbie Williams, Lorde and Flight of The Concords. After having the most fun time, with some of the most wonderful people, I decided I would like to spend more time at home and less time on a tour bus. So I started to come up with some business ideas.

Changing my lifestyle...

I had considered changing to a plant-based, vegan diet for a long time, having been vegetarian for a number of years, however I always felt I couldn't because I was kind of a baker. So, I decided having only donned a vegan diet for a month, that I should just make my bakery business vegan, and so it began, the obsession with creating plant-based recipes for cakes and bakes that were as good as, if not better than, the ones I had been making on tours.

Starting the business...

In February 2019 I held my first market stall selling only cupcakes (or as we call them in Yorkshire 'buns'. It was a great way to start, as I got to meet people, get feedback and get customers. I soon realised, as I get bored easily, that making only cupcakes wasn't going to work, so I started making layer cakes, brownies, cookies, cake truffles and rocky road bars. I sold at markets most weekends and then started to get orders for cakes and started selling to offices and to coffee shops too.

Where I am now...

I took a big step, or more accurately, leap of faith, in June 2020 and moved the bakery from my home kitchen to unit in Dalston, which is now where I bake everything myself. I hand deliver some orders in my van, post them across the UK or send them with a trusted courier. I have refined my menu from my market days and now create a selection of classic and seasonal cakes, cookies, buns and block cakes. My focus is on sustainable, quality ingredients to create delicious and beautiful bakes. I take so much pride, and a lot of time, sourcing ingredients and it's really what makes the bakes special. I am looking to grow the business in many directions and see were the Lovely Buns train takes me... choo choo!
*note to self: must start making choux to make for a great train related choux choux dad joke.
